After the Barricades

“Excuse me, I’m looking for Enjolras.
Would you know where he might be?”
“You, pretty one, for Enjolras,
Him, you don’t want to see.”

“Pardon me, sir, but I must see him,
For I have a message that’s urgent to give.”
“Don’t go in to see him now
Take it to someone who still wants to live.”

“The give this to him  from  his lady,
The one that he wanted to die for,
Tell him that she still loves him,
But that she wants nothing more.”

“Nothing  more, pretty one?
She was all he had left.
Will she leave him like this.
Alone and bereft?”

“Leave him, yes. To spur  men  on,
He never needed her.
He is the angel now, you see.
Enjolras, the world remembers.”
